What is it that drives public action on urban mobility issues?

26th-27th March 2012 - Paris

26 March 2012

The City Factory and the City on the Move Institute are organizing, in partnership, a colloquium about public action issues regarding mobility.

The event will take place on March 26th and 27th at La Bellevilloise in Paris.

This two-day conference will bring together all the teams from around the world who contributed to the research and interchanges. Academics, experts, public figures, decision-makers will debate the multiple processes that mould mobility policies: controversies, perceptions of the city, interests, values, human networks… .

The international conference, with simultaneous French/English translation, is aimed equally at academics and professionals, decision-makers and citizens involved in implementing city projects.

Online registration is free but required. Registration is open on www.movemaking.com.

List of speakers

21 CITIES, 14 INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAMS

This event is the outcome of an international research collaboration conducted in 21 cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Buenos Aires, Bogotá, Lima, Mexico, Santiago de Chile, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Paris Île-de-France, Barcelona, Eindhoven, Manchester, Cali, Jakarta, Ahmedabad, Brussels, Athens, Dakar, Guangzhou, Daegu…with an entirely new, collaborative research method: 14 interdisciplinary academic teams have analysed iconic transport projects in different cities, identifying the gaps between political intentions, social needs and actual outcomes.

WHAT IS IT THAT DRIVES PUBLIC ACTION ON URBAN MOBILITY ISSUES?

The tyranny of crisis? Catastrophe avoidance? Environmental protection? The competition between cities in a global world? Urban quality of life? The constant need for modernisation? The entrenched power of the protagonists? But also, what is it that impedes public action? Why is it that some problems, albeit serious, never reach the top of the agenda? Why do innovations continue to be ignored? … The aim of this international research effort is to help us understand the history and conditions of decision-making on a mobility solution within a specific context.

AND ALSO :

▪ A survey of 700 students around the world on their dreams for the city of tomorrow

▪ Specific analyses of controversial urban projects by young academics

▪ Personal contributions by politicians and experts; multimedia productions and films shown for the first time at the conference to cast a different light on the dynamics of mobility policies and to reflect their complexity;

▪ A collaborative platform www.movemaking.com to collect data and focus debate…
