Public spaces are open spaces shared by the community as a whole. Public spaces are open to all without discrimination. It is shared spaces, sites for meeting, and places where people can come and go freely.
Public spaces are often viewed as empty or residual spaces – areas left over between building, open to all forms of urban use. In fact, public spaces are breathing zones built into the heart of the city. They are a constitutive part of the urban environment, a key structural element. They contribute to urban continuity since they act as a link between buildings and neighbourhoods.
Public spaces are also a fundamental factor of social cohesion insofar as they serve the community. They are places where people meet, spaces for human interaction and social mediation.
Finally, public spaces are a constitutive element of the image cities project. Public spaces are often organized to showcase cities’ historical legacy, cultural landscape or natural surroundings. They are also a locus of representation in that they are stages for urban dynamics, including interactions between individuals and interactions between individuals and the spaces they occupy and claim.
Currently, what is the “recipe” for effective public spaces? How do public spaces evolve? What new uses do they serve? What are city-dwellers’ expectations with respect to public spaces and how can public authorities address them? What governance structures must we implement? Why do cities invest so much in public spaces (addressing issues such as image and power of attraction, quality of life, security)? What innovations and good practices can inspire us?
The speeches are available here.

I would like to say that La Fabrique de la Cité / The City Factory is very happy to welcome you here today in Barcelona. We talked about mobility issues in London, about sustainable cities in Copenhagen, and in Hamburg about the different stakes due to the cities transformation, particularly regarding population changes. We are now in Barcelona, and we are here to talk about public spaces. en savoir plus
The recent history of public spaces is quite well known in Barcelona. There is a lot of literature on that, so I'm not going to go in much detail about things that you already know, that you've heard many times before. I'd like to introduce some elements which have something to do with public spaces, the very essence of public spaces. But sometimes the problem is that the interpretation of public spaces can be somewhat superficial. The vision can remain focused on the visuals, when we look at the style and the problem is that people have a tendency not to go into really much details and really deal what makes up the quality of a good public space. en savoir plus
You have to wonder what the people the most concerned with public spaces, citizens, expect from them. en savoir plus
Projects for Public Spaces is a non-profit organisation based in New York City. We have worked in 2,500 communities, 40 countries, for the last 35 years. The New York Renaissance campaign is about closing Broadway to traffic to create more people space instead of automobile space. en savoir plus
When you talk about a public space, you can sometimes get confused about what is managed by the municipality, the space of the public sector and the collective spaces. Public spaces are collective spaces, accessible spaces, welcoming spaces (which does not mean free of charge) they make it possible to respond to daily needs and we must avoid spreading only good ideas and good feelings about the city. en savoir plus
Let us talk about the governance of public spaces. What are the different points of reference? en savoir plus
Everything we have heard in the seminary, is the result of the work and the willingness of elected representatives. en savoir plus
I am going to talk about a model invented in Toronto, Canada and introduced in Germany 6 years ago. This idea was very successful and spread all over the United States, all over Canada and Brazil (in Copacabana for instance) and South Africa. en savoir plus
There is no point in having these glamorous little touches if at the end of the day, it is going to be more of a hazard than a benefit. en savoir plus
If we want to dig a little deeper and talk about citizen engagement, we have to talk about confrontation. My title in French is a play on words which is untranslatable, “l’espace public, lieu de Bonheur”, but it has to do with happiness and confrontation at the same time. This is happiness through confrontation, or the other way around. en savoir plus
There are difficult constraints to work with, financial ones. If you are a Mayor with a big project, you will find the funding en savoir plus
We have talked a lot about public spaces. However we have not yet talked about what happens at night - night life - especially in northern countries. I come from Belgium and half of the year we are plunged in darkness. You have to think about what you want to do in a city once the night and the darkness has set in. en savoir plus
The cities that you’re building today will still be present in 50 or 100 years. en savoir plus
We may need to think about what needs to come next for La Fabrique de la Cité; possibly the relations between the public and the private spheres. en savoir plus
