Toronto, the “accidental metropolis”?
In the aftermath of its urban expedition to Toronto in September 2019, and as part of its collection of city portraits, La Fabrique de la Cité is publishing a new City Portrait dedicated to Toronto. A former provincial metropolis with limited influence now on a fast track to becoming a world city, Toronto is a young city, with an identity that is still in progress, and undergoing strong demographic growth. How can it provide the housing and infrastructure required to absorb this growth in the coming decades? Will it find a way to assert itself in the face of a highly powerful province? Finally, what will happen of the oft-criticized smart neighborhood project that US urban innovation company Sidewalk Labs is currently trying to develop on the shores of lake Ontario?
